What is a forex VPS?
A forex VPS (virtual private server) is a virtual Windows server in a data centre that runs your trading platform — usually MetaTrader 4 or 5 — around the clock. You connect via remote desktop (RDP), install your EAs there and let them run without your own machine being on. Unlike an ordinary cloud server, a true forex VPS sits in or near the broker data centres so orders execute with minimal latency.
Why use a VPS for EA trading?
An Expert Advisor can only trade while the platform is online. That is exactly why a VPS is so valuable for algo traders:
- 24/5 operation – The EA runs continuously, even when your PC is off, asleep or updating.
- Independent of home PC & internet – Power cuts, Wi-Fi drops or a crashed Windows at home no longer stop your EA.

Buying guide – what to look for
Latency to the broker server
The single most important point. What matters is not the distance to you but to your broker’s server. Most forex brokers host in Equinix LD4 (London) or NY4 (New York). Pick a VPS in the same data centre — that pushes latency down to a few milliseconds or below.
Uptime & SLA
An EA must run continuously. Look for a guaranteed uptime (99.9 %+ is common) and redundant networking so your terminal never drops offline mid-trade.
Specs by EA / chart count
CPU and RAM scale with the number of EAs and charts, not with the provider. See the guideline table below. Dedicated resources beat oversold shared cores.
Windows vs Linux
MT4 and MT5 are Windows programs. For classic EA operation you need a Windows VPS (via RDP). Linux only makes sense for wrapper/Wine setups or your own bots.
Platform compatibility
Check that MT4, MT5 and possibly cTrader are supported — most forex VPS cover all three. Futures traders may need NinjaTrader/TradeStation.

Many brokers offer a free VPS once you reach a minimum balance or a monthly trading volume (often a few lots). That is convenient and enough if you run one or two EAs at that specific broker — but the broker dictates location and specs.

Frequently asked questions
What is the difference between a forex VPS and a normal VPS?
A forex VPS is a virtual server optimised for running trading platforms like MT4/MT5 and located in or near the broker data centres (e.g. Equinix LD4 in London, NY4 in New York). A normal VPS targets general web/app workloads and rarely sits broker-adjacent — so latency to execution is higher and more variable.
Why does latency to the broker matter so much?
The closer your VPS sits to the broker server, the faster orders reach execution. Low latency means less slippage and fewer requotes — for scalping or news-sensitive EAs it can decide the outcome. That is why the VPS should be in the same data centre as your broker, not close to you.
What specs do I need for X EAs?
As a guideline: 1–2 EAs with few charts run on ~1 vCPU and ~2 GB RAM; 5–10 EAs with many charts need closer to 2–4 vCPU and 4–8 GB RAM; multiple terminals/multi-account need more again. These are orientation values — CPU/RAM depend on the number of charts, indicators and tick load, not on the provider.
Do I need my own VPS or is the free broker VPS enough?
Many brokers provide a free VPS once you reach a certain volume or minimum balance. That is often enough for one or two EAs at that specific broker. If you run multiple brokers, many EAs, or want full control over location and specs, your own VPS is the better choice.
Do I need Windows for the VPS?
For MT4 and MT5, yes — both are Windows programs. You connect to the Windows VPS via RDP and install the platform there. Linux is only relevant for Wine wrappers or your own bots.
What happens if the VPS fails in the middle of a trade?
Open positions stay with the broker — they are held server-side even when your terminal is offline. However, the EA can no longer manage the position (trailing stop, partial closes, new entries pause) until the VPS is back. That is why high uptime and an SL/TP set directly at the broker matter.
How do I connect to the VPS?
Via the Remote Desktop Protocol (RDP). On Windows you use “Remote Desktop Connection”, on Mac the “Windows App” client, and on mobile an RDP app. You enter the IP, username and password, then see the VPS’s Windows desktop running MT4/MT5.
