What is a forex VPS?

A forex VPS (virtual private server) is a virtual Windows server in a data centre that runs your trading platform — usually MetaTrader 4 or 5 — around the clock. You connect via remote desktop (RDP), install your EAs there and let them run without your own machine being on. Unlike an ordinary cloud server, a true forex VPS sits in or near the broker data centres so orders execute with minimal latency.

Why use a VPS for EA trading?

An Expert Advisor can only trade while the platform is online. That is exactly why a VPS is so valuable for algo traders:

Latency is created on the hop VPS → broker server, not on the hop to you. So only one question matters: which Equinix data centre hosts your broker’s trading server — and which VPS provider sits in the same building? The table summarises what our reviewed brokers state themselves and which providers above list that site.

Monthly entry prices, sorted ascending. Green rows are plans that sit broker-adjacent in an Equinix financial-market data centre and already include the Windows licence – only those really count as a “cheap forex VPS”, because a separate Windows licence quickly doubles a cloud price.

Rule of thumb: below $10, Hyonix is the only provider delivering both. From $25 upward, ForexVPS.net, FXVM or NYCServers sell you cross-connects and support rather than more compute.

Setting up MT5 on the VPS – in 7 steps

Applies equally to MT4. This is the order we use for our own terminals; the most common mistake is step 4 – an EA on the chart without algo trading enabled will not trade.

   Connect via RDP

   Enter IP, user and password from the order e-mail into “Remote Desktop Connection” (Windows) or “Windows App” (Mac). Since July 2026 Hyonix assigns custom RDP ports instead of 3389 – take the port from the e-mail.

   Install MT5 from the broker

   Download the MT5 installer straight from the broker website on the VPS, not the generic MetaQuotes build – server list and account type are then correct from the start.

   Transfer the EA and set file

   Move files via the clipboard (copy on your machine, paste in the RDP window) or a shared drive into “File → Open Data Folder → MQL5/Experts”, then hit “Refresh” in the Navigator.

   Enable algo trading

   Turn on the “Algo Trading” toolbar button and tick “Allow Algo Trading” in the EA dialog. Without both, the EA will not trade even though it sits on the chart.

   Check the ping

   Bottom right in the status bar MT5 shows the latency to the trade server. Broker-adjacent you should see single-digit milliseconds; double digits mean the wrong VPS location.

   Auto-start and power

   Put a shortcut to terminal64.exe in the Windows Startup folder, set Windows Update to outside trading hours and disable sleep, so the VPS resumes trading on its own after a reboot.

   Multiple accounts

   One separate MT5 installation per account in its own folder (or start with /portable). Budget roughly 300–500 MB RAM per terminal plus charts – with three to five terminals a 4 GB plan is the floor.
