Overview
Tickmill is a multiply regulated ECN/STP broker (group since ~2014) that positions itself primarily through competitive trading costs. That matters to algo traders: the Raw account is among the cheapest on commission anywhere, MT4 and MT5 are a given, and TradingView plus the in-house Tickmill Trader round things out. With 600+ instruments — including 62 FX pairs alongside indices, commodities, share and crypto CFDs — the range is solid without reaching into every niche.
Regulation & Safety
Tickmill operates through several licensed entities: FCA (UK, Tickmill UK Ltd, 717270), CySEC (Cyprus/EU, Tickmill Europe Ltd, 278/15), FSA Seychelles (Tickmill Ltd, SD008), FSCA (South Africa, FSP 49464), plus a DFSA licence (Dubai, F007663). EU and UK clients land with CySEC or the FCA respectively, with full European/UK protection frameworks including negative balance protection — a clear advantage over pure offshore brokers.
The usual trade-off concerns leverage: under FCA and CySEC the ESMA retail maximum of 1:30 applies. Anyone wanting the advertised 1:1000 must move to the FSA Seychelles entity and forgo the stronger regulatory protection — a deliberate trade-off.
Costs
This is Tickmill's core strength. The Raw account offers raw spreads from 0.0 pips (averaging ~0.1 pip on EUR/USD per the broker) at a commission of only 3 USD per lot per side (6 USD round-turn). That ranks among the lowest cost structures in the regulated broker space and makes Tickmill attractive for cost-sensitive scalping and high-frequency EAs. The Classic account foregoes commission but prices spreads from ~1.6 pips — the markedly more expensive option for active EAs. See also our comparison of the lowest-spread brokers.
Execution
Tickmill uses market execution without dealing-desk intervention and is praised in the community for reliable, requote-light fills. For most trend, grid, and swing EAs the profile is more than sufficient; high-frequency scalpers counting milliseconds should briefly validate execution in their own region, as latency varies by server location.
EA & Algo Suitability
The core requirements are met: EAs, scalping, and hedging are permitted without restriction on MT4 and MT5. Beyond the MetaTrader standards, TradingView and the Tickmill Trader are available. The most noticeable weakness for algo traders is the absence of cTrader — anyone working cAlgo/PineScript-centric finds no native option here. For VPS, Tickmill relies primarily on partner or volume-based solutions rather than a permanent free in-house offering; budget for this if you need 24/7 EA operation.
Conditions, Deposits & Support
The minimum deposit is 100 USD — a low, practical entry point. Accounts come in several base currencies (incl. USD, EUR, GBP, ZAR), and swap-free Islamic variants are available. Deposits and withdrawals run via bank transfer, card, and e-wallets (Skrill, Neteller). Support is multilingual and reliably reachable. US clients are not served.
Verdict
Tickmill is a cost-strong, well-regulated broker and a serious option for cost-sensitive EA traders: a Raw account at just 3 USD/lot/side, FCA and CySEC protection for EU/UK clients, and full EA support. Those needing cTrader or a permanent free broker VPS will look more towards BlackBull or Fusion Markets; but anyone focused primarily on MetaTrader with minimal commission gets one of the cheapest regulated environments on the market with Tickmill.
