Overview
Darwinex was founded in 2012 and sees itself less as a classic retail broker than as a platform between traders and investors. For EA and algo traders that is the real point: trading on Darwinex automatically produces a verified track record that can become an investable DARWIN. On top come solid trading conditions with a commission of about €5 round-turn per lot, servers in London's Equinix LD4, and both MetaTrader platforms plus TradingView, DXtrade and a FIX API. The downside: a €500 minimum deposit, no free VPS and only a few payment methods for EU clients.
Regulation & Safety
Darwinex operates through three companies: Tradeslide Trading Tech Ltd is authorised by the FCA (UK, FRN 586466), Sapiens Markets EU Sociedad de Valores SA by Spain's CNMV (no. 311) — this EU entity holds a MiFID II passport and can therefore serve clients across the EEA. In addition, Tradeslide Global Ltd holds a licence from the FSA Seychelles (SD171).
For clients in the DACH region the protection is documented: the EU entity is covered by the Spanish investor compensation scheme FOGAIN up to €100,000, the UK entity by the FSCS up to £85,000. Client money is held separately from company funds, and according to Darwinex negative balance protection applies to the EU and UK entities. The Seychelles company, by contrast, explicitly offers no compensation. Two top-tier regulators plus one offshore licence give 4.4 under our methodology — solid, but not quite the regulatory net of a Pepperstone.
Costs
For FX and commodities Darwinex charges a commission of roughly 0.005% of notional value (round-turn). For one lot of EUR/USD (€100,000 notional) that is €5 round-turn, i.e. in the region of 5–6 USD. Running a DARWIN with a good D-Score lowers the price: €4 per lot from a D-Score of 55, €3 from 60 — a discount of up to 40%, which professional clients also receive. Darwinex does not quote minimum spreads on its help page but refers to its live spreads table.
On the other side are ancillary costs: Darwinex passes withdrawal costs on to the client, Skrill deposits carry 0.5%, and USD wires under 2,000 USD may incur bank charges. For actively trading EAs these are minor items; overall the score is 4.4.
Execution
According to Darwinex its MetaTrader servers sit in Equinix LD4 in London and are cross-connected directly to the liquidity providers; the VPS partner BeeksFX is connected there as well. That is the infrastructure latency-sensitive EAs need. Darwinex is less transparent about the execution model itself: we found no concrete figures on execution speed or slippage on the official pages. Hence 4.5 rather than a score in the top band.
EA & Algo Suitability
This is where Darwinex is strong. EAs run as usual on MT4 and MT5, joined by TradingView (since July 2026), DXtrade and a FIX API for custom systems. The real argument, though, is the DARWIN model:
- Every strategy on a Darwinex account becomes a DARWIN that investors can allocate capital to. Profits on third-party capital carry a 20% performance fee — 15% goes to the trader, 5% to Darwinex (high-water mark, quarterly).
- Investors in a DARWIN pay a management fee of 1.2% p.a. on the invested capital on top of the performance fee, charged pro rata daily (not during inactive periods without market exposure). From an investor's point of view that is a noticeable drag on a DARWIN's return.
- Through DarwinIA Darwinex hands out notional seed capital every month: €30,000 to €375,000 in SILVER (requirements include 1,000 USD account equity), €50,000 to €500,000 in GOLD for strategies with more than eight months of history. These also pay a 15% performance fee.
- Existing MT accounts at other brokers can be linked for analysis, provided at least 95% of trades were on instruments Darwinex offers.
What is missing is a free VPS: Darwinex points to its partner BeeksFX, whose servers sit in the same data centre. If you run your own VPS, our VPS guide for EAs lists the criteria. There is no cTrader. Under our rubric that gives 4.5 — the DARWIN programme lifts Darwinex above a plain broker comparison for algo traders, while the lack of free infrastructure keeps it out of the top band.
Conditions, Deposits & Support
The €500 minimum deposit (or USD/GBP) is high for an ECN offering; corporate accounts start at 10,000. Account currencies are EUR, USD and GBP. Retail clients trade with ESMA leverage (1:30 on FX majors, 1:20 on other pairs), professional clients with up to 1:200. The range is modest: 42 FX pairs, 10 indices, 4 commodities, around 800 US stocks and 100 US ETFs, plus 7 crypto CFDs on MT5 only. Darwinex does not offer swap-free accounts. Conditions: 3.8.
Payment methods for EU clients are sparse: bank wire; card and Skrill are only open to clients of the UK entity. Withdrawals are possible from €10, with costs borne by the client. That gives 3.7.
Verdict
Darwinex is not a broker for beginners with small accounts but an offering for algo traders who want to raise capital with a proven strategy. FCA and CNMV regulation, €5 round-turn and LD4 infrastructure form a solid base; none of the other brokers we have reviewed offers anything like the DARWIN and DarwinIA programmes. If instead you mainly want to run several EAs cheaply and conveniently, a classic ECN broker such as Pepperstone is the better fit: a lower entry hurdle and more payment methods, although in the EU its free VPS is reserved for pro clients with a minimum volume.
