What Really Matters in an EA Broker
Automated trading demands different criteria than manual trading. A strong EA broker excels on execution quality (low latency, minimal slippage), low all-in costs (raw spread + commission), unrestricted EA/scalping/hedging policies, and reliable VPS connectivity. These are precisely the factors we weight most heavily in our methodology.
The table below summarises all brokers we have tested, sorted by overall score. Each rating is linked — the individual review contains the full rationale, fact box, and pros/cons.
The True Cost: Raw Spread + Commission
The advertised "0.0-pip spread" is only half the story. On ECN/raw accounts a commission is added — your effective per-trade cost is the sum of both:
- ECN example: 0.1 pip raw spread + USD 7 round-turn commission per lot ≈ 0.8 pip effective spread on EUR/USD.
- "Commission-free" example: 1.0–1.5 pip spread but no separate commission — usually more expensive for high-frequency EAs.
For EA portfolios that trade often, this combined figure decides profit or loss. Always add spread + commission together and relate it to your average pip target: a scalper aiming for 5 pips already hands 16% of gross profit to the broker at 0.8 pip of cost.
EA Policy & Execution Model
Not every broker treats automated strategies the same. Check before opening an account:
- Scalping & hedging explicitly allowed — some market makers quietly restrict short-term strategies.
- True ECN/STP rather than a dealing desk: no "last look", no requotes, orders routed to external liquidity.
- No minimum holding time and no caps on order frequency or pending orders.
- Server location in a financial data centre (Equinix NY4/LD4) — the basis for low latency.
Regulation & Leverage — the Trade-off
EU-regulated entities (BaFin, CySEC) are capped at 1:30 leverage under ESMA and offer deposit protection. Offshore entities (FSA, FSC) often allow 1:500 or more but with weaker investor protection. For many EA strategies the higher leverage matters for capital efficiency — most brokers listed here operate both entities and let you choose at sign-up. Safety vs. leverage is a deliberate decision, not just a broker question.
Our Ranking
The table is sorted by our weighted overall score. Leading the pack are the true raw/ECN brokers with strong execution and free VPS offerings; market-maker models and purely offshore-regulated providers rank further down.
