In short
Copy trading is not a trading rule of its own. Your account takes over someone else's trades, automatically and at a size you set. The strategy is therefore the provider's, with everything that comes with it.
What is new are the costs of the copy. Every trade arrives in your account a little later and is filled at a slightly worse price. In the schematic the line shows the provider's entry; the positions belong to the follower. With large targets the difference hardly matters, with scalping targets of a few pips it decides the result.
Signal platforms are compared under Signal providers. How a copier for Telegram signals works is shown in the review of the Semaphore Telegram signal copier. A provider account can be checked without risk for you via the investor password.
The strategy as a schematic
A drawn price path, no market data. First the case where the rule works, then the same routine when it fails.

Schematic, no market data: a drawn price path, results in pips weighted to 0.10 lots. Not a backtest and no statement about any real EA.
How the strategy trades
- Choose a provider whose account is shown publicly (signal platform, Telegram channel, the broker's copy feature).
- Set the copy settings: lot size or factor, maximum risk, which symbols are copied.
- When the provider opens a trade, the follower account opens it too, usually fractions of a second to seconds later.
- When the provider closes, the follower closes as well, again a little later.
- The follower's result is the provider's minus delay, slippage, spread difference and fees.
Where the risk sits
You take on the provider's risk, including the part you cannot see. An account with a smooth curve can be a grid or martingale without a stop. Before copying, what counts is not the return but how the provider loses: open loss, largest lot size, longest period under water.
Every copy is worse than the original. With trades aiming for large targets one pip of difference hardly shows. With scalping providers aiming for a few pips, the delay can cost the whole profit: the provider is in profit, the follower at a loss.
Different account sizes, leverage and brokers change the risk. A factor that means 1 % per trade for the provider can be a multiple on a smaller account. Subscription or performance fees lower the result further.
When it works, when it fails
Tends to work when …
- Providers with larger targets and holding times of hours or days.
- A long, verifiable live record with a stop on every trade.
- A similar broker, similar account size and a fast copy connection.
Tends to fail when …
- Scalping providers with targets of a few pips: delay and slippage eat the profit.
- Providers without a stop (grid, martingale) whose curve looks smooth for a long time.
- A copy factor too large for your own account size.
How to recognise it in an EA
Traces in the trade log of a live account, whatever the vendor calls the EA.
- In the follower account: entries shortly after the provider's, almost always at slightly worse prices.
- A comment or magic number field with the name of a signal service or copier.
- The follower's result systematically below the provider's, most clearly on short trades.
- Trades at times and on symbols that fit no rule of your own.
Typical settings
| Setting | Typical | Effect |
|---|---|---|
| Copy factor | fixed, proportional to account size, or fixed lots | Sets how large the risk is in your account. |
| Max. loss | e.g. daily or total limit | Stops copying before the account is empty. |
| Max. slippage | e.g. 1–3 pips | Trades with a worse price are not copied. |
| Symbol filter | only certain pairs | Prevents unexpected markets. |
Common ranges from EA manuals and set files, not a recommendation.
EAs in our tests built this way
No EA in our tests is explicitly tagged with this design yet. Many EAs combine it with other mechanics; the trade log usually shows it sooner than the product description. All EA reviews →
