The short version
Forex robots — Expert Advisors, or EAs, in MetaTrader — are programs that execute your trading rules automatically. The honest experience after years of running our own live park: a small share work long-term, the large majority do not. The difference is never in the marketing; it is in the verified live account.
We run forex robots on real accounts, pull the public live signals every week, and publish the numbers including drawdown and losing months. This page sums up what comes out of that — and how to tell a legit robot from a poor one yourself.
What works in practice
- Defined risk beats a smooth curve. EAs with a stop-loss on every position survive the live phases where grid and martingale systems wipe the account. A dead-straight backtest curve is a warning, not a seal of quality.
- A long live track record is rare and valuable. Most commercial EAs vanish after one or two years. A robot with a multi-year public signal that has survived several market regimes is the exception.
- One robot is not a portfolio. Five EAs on the same instrument are one bet with five multipliers. Spreading across uncorrelated strategies lowers the combined drawdown — more in the EA portfolio management guide.
What fails in practice
- Grid and martingale without a capital buffer. They look perfect for months and give it all back in a single one-directional move. The mechanics are in the grid and martingale risk guide.
- Robots without a live account. 99 % modelling quality in the strategy tester is not a track record. Why live results diverge from backtests is in why EAs fail live.
- Wrong sizing. The most common reason for losses is not the EA but a lot size that is too large. The formula is in position sizing and risk per trade.
How to spot a legit forex robot
- A public, verified live account older than a year (Myfxbook, FX Blue, MQL5 signal).
- Maximum drawdown from the live data, not the backtest.
- A stop-loss on every position rather than a basket close.
- A transparent strategy description — if the vendor won't say whether it averages down, assume it does.
- A sensible price with no scarcity-ramp.

Our experience, in the dashboard
Instead of single anecdotes, we publish every robot we test with a rating, a verified live track and a risk classification in the EA review dashboard — 60+ Expert Advisors, searchable by strategy, risk and price. If you run several robots yourself, track them with the free portfolio tracker, which shows the combined drawdown across all accounts.
Verdict
Forex robots work — but only the few with a real edge, defined risk and a verified live account. Measure any robot by the maximum drawdown of its live curve, not the return figure, run it on an ECN broker with tight spreads and a VPS, and treat it as one building block of a portfolio, not a money machine.
